DepEd NegOr chief amenable to moving opening of classes
DUMAGUETE CITY, Feb. 6 (PIA) --- The head of the Department of Education (DepEd) Negros Oriental Division is open to the idea of moving the opening of classes from June to August or September.
DepEd Negros Oriental Division Supt. Salustiano Jimenez said he is not against the idea of having classes during summer period since they have already been conducting pre-school summer classes.
“If young children can get used to it, why can’t the old students?” Jimenez said.
Jimenez made the statement when asked for his reaction about moving the opening of classes in line with the concept of the integration of members of the Association of Southest Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The DepEd official also said he is in favor of the ASEAN integration because it will bring synchronization in all schools throughout the region.
“It is also god to accept change for the better. If we keep on clinging to what is traditional, probably we will wake up one day that we are alienated in the world we are in. We should be updated, we should be upgraded, and we have to look forward to what is best in the present society we have,” Jimenez said.
He also added that the Philippines is the only country in Asia which starts classes in June.
However, Jimenez noted that transferring the school opening should not be implemented immediately.
Jimenez explained that schools are still in the transition phase of implementing the K to 12 basic education program and it is not advisable to start a new program that would require another transition period for students.
Meanwhile, the DepEd Division of Negros Oriental has started the processing of applications for more than 400 vacant teacher positions in the province.
Jimenez said as of this month, they are now at the stage of demonstrations and interviews.
“By March we will submit the applications to the division office for the review and by May, probably on the second or third week, we will start hiring new teachers,” Jimenez said.
The hiring of teachers is in time for the opening of the next school year.
Vacant positions are for both elementary and high school but Jimenez noted that most of the items are in secondary level. (rmn/RAL/PIA7-NEGOR)

DUMAGUETE CITY, Feb. 6 (PIA) – The Department of Education (DepEd) Division of Negros Oriental urged the athletes joining the Central Visayas Regional Athletic Association (CVRAA) meet this month to do their best.
“To the athletes, I told them 'Sulong NegOr!' We want to be number one. The potential is already in you, so yours is to do your best,” DepEd Negros Oriental Division Supt. Salustiano Jimenez said.
Jimenez hopes that this year, the Division of Negros Oriental will be able to climb further in the rankings of schools division participating in the CVRAA.
Last year, Negros Oriental was at fifth place in the overall rankings.
The DepEd Division here sent 700 delegates for the CVRAA slated on Feb. 8 – 13 in Cebu.
Five hundred of them are student athletes who will compete in various sports activities except gymnastics.
Jimenez explained that division has no delegates for gymnastics this CVRAA meet but he already instructed the supervisor in-charge of sports to start training athletes for gymnastics this school year so that they can participate in said event in the next CVRAA.
The first batch of delegates already left for Cebu last night while the second batch is set to travel this morning.
Before leaving, Jimenez talked to the delegates and challenged them to be number one, be the most disciplined delegation, and be the delegation with the cleanest and greenest billeting quarter.
Meanwhile, the DepEd Division of Negros Oriental has allocated P4.2M as financial support for CVRAA but Jimenez added that local government units also shared some funding for the schools participating in the regional sports event. (rmn/RAL/PIA7-NEGOR)

Excerpts from Secretary Armin Luistro’s speech for World Teachers’ Day - Oct 5, 2013
Maraming salamat po at Happy World Teachers' Day!
